Writing and Perfectionism

Every so often on Hacker News the topic of writing itself comes up, specifically in the context of writing blog posts. An article by Swapnil Chauhan was recently shared where he mentions that the two things keeping him from writing more are perceived lack of skill and caring too much about what others think.

For myself personally I think one of the primary causes has been perfectionism. Writing specifically for a personal blog is interesting because it requires breaking the mask of anonymity and sharing a piece of yourself with an unknown audience. Having to attach my name to my writing causes a feeling of pressure to only publish posts that are "profound" and polished.

The Hacker News comments seem to agree that to submit yourself to public writing means agreeing to lower your standards and embrace imperfection. Going forward I'm going to challenge myself to write frequent and imperfect posts about anything I find interesting.
